Neurological Dysfunction: Everything You Need to Know

The term “Neurological Dysfunction” refers to a condition that affects how your nervous system functions. Neurological dysfunction disorders can have many symptoms, varying from mild to serious. Yet, they are typically caused by a malfunctioning or disruption of your nervous system, which includes your nerves, brain, and spinal cord.

At the Arkansas-based Spero Clinic, neurological conditions are no strangers; many Spero patients have entered the clinic with neurological dysfunction symptoms.

Your nervous system regulates everything you do. It helps you breathe, swallow, sleep, and move. It allows your heart to beat and your body to age. Also, it assists with processes like digestion and metabolism. Finally, it coordinates your senses and helps you speak, learn, and remember.

In short, it’s the system that connects everything in your body through an intricate message system from the brain via the nerves to all areas in your body. When those messages and impulses are disrupted, trouble begins.

Different Types of Neurological Disorders

Under the term “neurological disorders,” there are hundreds of different conditions that exist, roughly divided into the following categories based on their symptoms:

  • Neurodegenerative conditions: Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease.
  • Neuromuscular conditions: Muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
  • Brain conditions: Epilepsy, migraines and headache disorders, stroke, traumatic brain injury.
  • Spine conditions: spinal cord injury, spinal muscular atrophy.
  • Peripheral nerve conditions: Peripheral neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, Bell’s palsy.

From this list, you can see that neurological dysfunction disorders are very common and can occur at any age.

Causes of Neurological Dysfunction Disorders

Your nervous system coordinates pretty much every bodily function, so there’s a wide range of symptoms for neurological disorders which vary based on their type and severity. Some conditions may affect only one function or body part, while others can affect the whole body. Depending on the type of dysfunction, symptoms may come and go such as migraines, or only happen once, like a stroke, or progressively get worse over time such as Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s.

While most of what actually causes a neurological disorder is still unknown territory within the medical community, some identified causes include infections, genetic changes, an injury, or damage to part of your nervous system such as brain damage or spinal cord damage.

Tests such as EEGs, EMGs, MRIs, and CT scans, as well as blood tests, are typically conducted to get an understanding of the disorder, where it seems to be centered, and the effects it creates on your body.

Treatments and Management

Conventional treatments vary as much as the different neurological disorders themselves. Treatments for strokes differ from migraine treatments, even though both are caused by a malfunctioning nervous system. That fact alone may be the reason why the first thing in conventional treatment is medication, which may be able to manage the symptoms but will not cure the condition itself.

CEO and Founder of The Spero Clinic, Dr. Katinka van der Merwe, has dedicated her career to treating patients who live with chronic daily pain, and those having suffered catastrophic neurologic damage, such as traumatic brain injuries, amputation, and paralysis, resulting in chronic neurological pain.

Her extensive research found that people who suffer from chronic neurological disorders also tend to suffer, by definition, from an underactive Vagus nerve, which runs directly from the brain to all parts of the body. A malfunctioning Vagus nerve will cause inflammation in one part (or all the parts) of the body, resulting in chronic pain and a host of other neurological issues including Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), Fibromyalgia, and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

Unique Treatment Modalities

Spero’s holistic treatment modalities are directed at repairing and reactivating the nervous system and its various components such as the Vagus nerve, the brain, and your lymphatic system.

Treatments such as detoxification, reactivation, and non-invasive interactive neurostimulation address different parts of the nervous system, with often remarkable results. This one-of-a-kind clinic has successfully treated hundreds of patients with an unprecedented success rate of over 84%.

Says Dr. Katinka, “Unlike most treatments out there today, we do not aim to disrupt or numb the pain signals, we aim to uncover abnormalities in the central nervous system and restore balance to it. When the nervous system is given the tools that it needs to achieve a state of balance once again, signs and symptoms of neurological disorders tend to resolve. You are not broken beyond repair. Your body is amazing and capable of healing!”
