In pediatric Long COVID cases, FND symptoms can overlap with other post-viral complications, further complicating diagnosis and treatment. A correct diagnosis and a multidisciplinary approach are essential for recovery. Most importantly, it is vital that you know that children with FND are not faking their symptoms. Their condition should be treated like any other neurological condition outside of their control. While children cannot control the symptoms of FND, they will display fewer of them when not stressed, and conversely, exhibit more symptoms when they are stressed. When your child is stressed his or her nervous system is also under pressure. This does not mean that FND is a psychological problem that can be controlled. It cannot.

Common Symptoms of Pediatric FND in Pediatric Long COVID:

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) in pediatric patients—particularly those recovering from Long COVID—demands a shift in how we understand and approach unexplained neurological symptoms in children. No longer seen as “all in the head,” FND is a real, complex condition that affects brain function and can significantly impair a child’s quality of life. With early recognition, validation of the child’s symptoms, and a compassionate, multidisciplinary treatment approach, many young patients can experience meaningful recovery.

By continuing to educate healthcare providers and families about FND’s neurobiological underpinnings, we can reduce stigma, foster healing, and ensure children receive the support and care they need.

Gastrointestinal Disorders in Pediatric Long COVID:

Children recovering from COVID-19 have shown a higher risk of developing new GI tract symptoms and disorders during the post-acute phase. Gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction is a common and often debilitating feature of pediatric Long COVID, with symptoms ranging from nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhea to more severe complications such as gastroparesis.

Although gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in pediatric Long COVID may seem like a purely digestive problem, emerging research shows they are often neurologically driven. The autonomic nervous system—which regulates involuntary functions like digestion—can be disrupted by SARS-CoV-2 infection, leading to dysautonomia. This dysfunction can impair gut motility, contributing to conditions like gastroparesis, where the stomach empties too slowly, causing nausea, vomiting, early satiety, and weight loss. (15)

Vagal nerve involvement has also been suggested, given its role in regulating GI function and inflammation (16). Another study specifically identified autonomic dysfunction and GI dysmotility—including gastroparesis—as common features in Long COVID patients, noting parallels with post-viral syndromes like POTS (17). These neurological disruptions may explain why some children with persistent GI symptoms require enteral nutrition despite no structural abnormalities. Recognizing GI symptoms as part of a neuroimmune and autonomic condition is essential for accurate diagnosis, compassionate care, and appropriate multidisciplinary treatment.

Here are common and serious gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms seen in pediatric Long COVID, including those related to gastroparesis:

Understanding that GI issues in pediatric Long COVID are often rooted in neurologic dysfunction can be a turning point for both parents and clinicians. It shifts the narrative from one of confusion or dismissal to one of clarity and compassion. These children are not simply dealing with stomachaches—they’re experiencing a breakdown in how their nervous system communicates with their gut. Recognizing this helps guide more appropriate treatments, including the use of pro-motility agents, nutritional support, and autonomic regulation strategies. Most importantly, it reinforces that these symptoms are real, biological, and deserving of care. With continued research and multidisciplinary support, there is hope for healing and recovery.

While the journey through pediatric Long COVID can be overwhelming and filled with uncertainty, it is important to remember that you are not alone, and neither is your child. The physical, emotional, and neurological effects of this condition are very real, but so is the growing awareness, research, and medical support surrounding it. More clinicians are learning how to recognize and treat these symptoms, and more families are speaking out and finding community in shared experience. Recovery may not follow a straight line, but with patience, the right care, and a team that listens and believes you, healing is possible.

Just as importantly, parents need to be aware of the other conditions that may develop alongside or after Long COVID, such as POTS, ME/CFS, CRPS, AMPS, FND, and more. These aren’t rare in this context—and knowing what to look for can save families months or even years of frustration, misdiagnosis, or being dismissed by doctors who simply don’t yet understand. When you know what’s possible, you can advocate early, seek the right specialists, and help your child get the care they deserve.

How Spero Clinic Helps: Treating the Root Cause, Not Just Symptoms

At The Spero Clinic, we view neurological symptoms in the context of whole-system dysregulation after illness. Rather than managing each symptom in isolation, we focus on restoring balance to the central and autonomic nervous systems so the body can resume normal regulation from within.

Core pillars of our approach

This is not a one-size-fits-all protocol. We individualize care to the child’s presentation and adapt as they progress.
