Collagen supplements are frequently promoted as beneficial for joint and skin health. However, individuals diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) may not experience the anticipated advantages of such supplements. EDS is a connective tissue disorder characterized by impaired collagen production, and while supplementation may seem appealing, it does not rectify the genetic mutation that underlies the condition.
The root cause of EDS lies in the improper production of collagen due to genetic anomalies. Merely ingesting collagen supplements does not alter the body’s ability to produce or utilize collagen effectively.
As noted by Dr. Katinka, “The challenge with EDS is not a deficiency of collagen, but rather the presence of structurally defective collagen. Supplementing with collagen fails to mend or substitute the flawed collagen that is encoded in an individual’s genetic makeup.”
Some patients with EDS have reported negative reactions to collagen supplements, such as heightened joint laxity and gastrointestinal issues. Given that EDS already results in excessively flexible joints and delicate tissues, the addition of collagen may not enhance connective tissue strength as it typically would in individuals without the condition.
Instead of depending on collagen supplements, effective healing EDS requires a holistic strategy to regulate the nervous system.
At the Spero Clinic, we are dedicated to addressing the fundamental causes of chronic pain associated with EDS, with an emphasis on restoring functionality and enhancing overall quality of life. Reach out to us for more information.
