Yes. Many seizure-like episodes after Long COVID are non-epileptic seizures—functional seizures that occur without the abnormal electrical activity seen in epilepsy. They arise when the brain temporarily cannot send and receive signals properly, even though there is no structural damage. This is characteristic of FND: a breakdown in function, not a lesion or injury.
Non-epileptic does not mean “not real.” These episodes reflect a nervous system stuck in dysregulation after illness. Recognizing the pattern helps families and clinicians pursue care that restores nervous system balance instead of chasing symptom labels alone.
At The Spero Clinic, we view seizure-like episodes in the context of whole-system dysregulation after illness. Rather than managing each symptom in isolation, we focus on restoring balance to the central and autonomic nervous systems so the body can resume normal regulation from within.
This is not a one-size-fits-all protocol. We individualize care to the child’s presentation and adapt as they progress.
Many families come to us after being told to “wait it out,” or after normal tests left them without a path forward. This program is designed for those complex presentations—where symptoms are real, multi-system, and in need of a root-cause strategy.
If your child is experiencing seizure-like episodes after illness—especially with new dizziness, fatigue, headaches, or GI symptoms—seek evaluation. Share detailed observations: what it looks like, how long it lasts, any triggers (standing, stress, sensory load), recovery time, and any day-to-day patterns. Early, compassionate recognition of functional seizures/FND can shorten the road to appropriate treatment.
