Battling an illness can take a toll on your body. Along with primary symptoms, individuals may experience side effects as well. For example, those fighting Long COVID often have spells of lightheadedness.

Below, we will tell you everything you need to know about lightheadedness in COVID and its treatment options.

Important Information about Lightheadedness in COVID

It is important to understand the difference between dizziness and lightheadedness. While they may sound similar, dizziness is the feeling of wooziness and disorientation, whereas lightheadedness is the feeling like you’re going to faint.

Lightheadedness in COVID often stems from damage to the vestibular system. This is the series of neural pathways that control your body’s sense of balance.

The COVID-19 virus attaches itself to your body’s ACE2 receptors. These are proteins coating the exterior of cells. If this occurs, there may be cell inflammation in the body, which results in feelings of lightheadedness.

Inflammation can also occur due to the overproduction of cytokines. Similar to ACE2 receptors, these are enzymes that help protect your body against viruses. However, excessive cytokines may lead to good cells getting attacked. This can trigger symptoms of faintness and lightheadedness.

How long does COVID lightheadedness last?

This mainly depends on the individual, their medical history, and the severity of illness.

For example, someone with a previous history of vestibular or autoimmune issues may be more likely to experience lightheadedness. Those with standard COVID-19 can feel faint for a few minutes. Individuals with post-COVID conditions may notice persistent lightheadedness, lasting for months.

How to Effectively Treat COVID Lightheadedness

*If your feelings of lightheadedness are followed by heart palpitations, trouble speaking, or loss of consciousness, call your doctor immediately, as these may be signs of serious health complications.

There are ways to manage lightheadedness symptoms.

First, it is important to maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Low blood sugar can increase the likelihood and worsen the feelings of lightheadedness. Beverages such as juice and foods such as candy, crackers, or honey may help regulate blood sugar.

In addition, avoid drinking caffeinated beverages as they can lower blood pressure. Instead, drink water and beverages with electrolytes.
