Along with general fatigue, many COVID-19 patients experience moderate to severe dizziness. Understandably, this can feel quite disorienting. In particular, those dealing with Long COVID may battle with prolonged bouts of dizziness.

The following sections will discuss the effects of COVID dizziness, how long they can last, and what treatment methods are available.

How Long Does COVID Dizziness Last?

Depending on its severity, dizziness from COVID-19 can last for months at a time. Typically, this occurs with individuals who have Long COVID

COVID dizziness can occur for a multitude of reasons. In particular, it can be a symptom of an overactive immune system. In order to fight a virus, your body will produce cytokines. This is a protein that assists in virus protection and defense. If your body produces too much cytokine, it can affect your body’s sense of balance. This often results in feelings of dizziness and vertigo.

Dizziness may be an indicator of dehydration. A lack of fluid intake can cause feelings of dizziness and lightheadedness. This is also a common side effect of various medications. Be sure to drink plenty of water and electrolyte beverages to keep your body hydrated.

COVID-19 is known to attack the body’s ACE2 receptors. These are enzymes of the exterior of cells found in the lungs, heart, and kidneys. If the COVID-19 virus attaches to ACE2 receptors, it can lead to cell inflammation. Dizziness is a common symptom of this condition.

Dizziness is not a singular symptom of COVID-19. Oftentimes, it is paired alongside other side effects. For example, stress, irregular heart rates, and nervous system issues can lead to prolonged dizziness.

Exercises such as Cawthorne stretches or the Epley maneuver can be quite helpful. These will help with motion and balance stabilization.

*For more serious situations, please seek medical assistance. Individuals who are experiencing severe dizziness are more likely to fall and get injured.

Treatment options such as medication or therapy may be prescribed.
